I joined my first book club a few months back and the first book chosen was The Duke and I by Julia Quinn. As I’ve stated previously, romance is not really my cup of tea but I enjoyed the last one I read so was not daunted. And being a historical romance, the historian in me was getting a ‘fix’ so all good. And like many of you, most of my ‘reading’ is now done via audiobook, so I wanted to put up front that I actually listened rather than read it.
The Duke and I is the first book in the Bridgerton series. Overall, while I didn’t love it, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Well written and perfectly read, it was nice and easy to consume in the car. A couple of the characters, such as Anthony and Simon, annoyed me regularly, which detracted from my enjoyment of the book – as did some of the sexual details that added nothing to the storyline.
Am I glad I listened to The Duke and I? I must say I am. Will I be purchasing Book Two of the series? No, probably not. But if romance is your ‘thing’, I would recommend reading it.
